Data Centre used by SheerHosting

SheerHosting uses a shared data centre based in Baltimore, part of the greater Washington-Baltimore technology corridor. The power grid on which the data centre is located has 3 power stations, which are also relied upon by 2 major banks. The servers are protected against power failure by redundant hot-swappable power supplies and a diesel generator in the unlikely event of all 3 power stations failing. This ensures minimal chance of downtime of the servers.

The building is well-protected and guarded 24/7 by security guards, and is also protected by biometric scanners on door locks and a Halon System to protect against fire.

The servers run dual Intel Xeon EM64T 2.8GHz processors (2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB) with 4GB of RAM (DDR2-400 ECC Registered SDRAM) and RAID1 (400MHz 64MB ECC Adaptec RAID Card) hard drive configuration, which ensures protection against data loss. In addition to RAID1, automated server-wide system backups are made frequently.

The network operations centre of the data centre is in the same building as stations of several ISPs, including AT&T, MCI, Cogent and Qwest. Studies have shown that 70% of 10 hour+ internet connection downtime is usually caused by telephone circuit failure, which is virtually eliminated due to the direct local loop to stations of AT&T, MCI, MFS and Qwest in the same building.
